Rubber is one of the most indispensable items used in our daily lives. Most of the products that we use everyday include rubber in one form or the other. There are basically two types of rubber-natural and man-made rubber. Natural rubber is derived from cultivated trees where as man-made rubber or synthetic rubber is a variation of plastic that is produced in manufacturing plants. It is mostly derived from minerals and petroleum products.

All types of rubber are useless in its raw form but when combined with the right type of chemicals, it is one of the most versatile products in the world. A wide variety of products ranging from a bowling ball to a sponge, rubber has numerous applications in modern life.

History of Synthetic Rubber

Although it was first created in 1910, it was commercialized in the year 1931. During the Second World War, there was considerable shortage of natural rubber products which further instigated the emergence of man-made rubber plants in various parts of the world. People recognized the advantages of man-made rubber over natural rubber. Ever since then, synthetic products have been popularized in various forms.

Today it is widely used as an alternative to natural rubber products as it is more cost effective compared to the latter. DuPont was first credited to have developed the man-made rubber. The Buna rubber, which is the first series of man-made rubber, was invented in the year 1935. It was the primary rubber used in the Second World War. Due to the advantageous features of man-made rubber, more factories were installed in many parts of the world. This led to the constant decline in the use of natural rubber products.

Various Uses of Synthetic Rubber

Synthetic rubber has a wide number of applications which include the following.

Space travel: This rubber was first used for fueling missiles in the Second World War. This rubber based fuel became quiet prominent by the year 1950 with more missiles fueled by rubber based fuels. Moreover, as it could be shaped into various forms, the efficiency of burning was multiplied.

Medical field: It also found wide applications in the field of science and medicine. It is used for manufacturing orthopedic braces, gloves and so forth.

Tyres: This rubber is also used to manufacture tyres of different varieties. Today most of the tyres are made of man-made rubber. As it is both tensile and strong, it is considered to be ideal choice for automobile tyres.

In addition to the above mentioned uses and applications, this is also used for a wide variety of purposes. It is used to make mechanical belts, mechanical hoses and seals. It is also used to make gaskets of different types. Man-made rubber is used to manufacture knee-high boots, diving suits, sleep sacks, protective clothing and so forth. As it possesses adhesive qualities, it is also used in adhesive tapes and liquids for the purpose of manufacturing adhesives. With multifaceted uses, this man-made rubber product is undoubtedly a part of our lives.
